Announcing Advanced Threat Protection: Some announcements are better than others

Details of 30,000 federal employees was leaked recently after cyber criminals breached a Department of Homeland Security database.

I have been going to the same summer camp every year since I was about 5. Back then it was 4 single moms looking for a place to bring their kids for some outdoors fun and a hope that the kids would take part in an activity long enough to get through a chapter in their books while they float on the river. Now the moms are all grandmothers and we are the parents trying to get a moment to float in piece.  Every night during dinner (yes San Jose Family Camp serves 3 warm meals a day. I mentioned it was 4 moms right?) the camp counselors would jump on the cafeteria loud speaker and break into song, “Announcements, Announcements, Annooooouuuuuuuncements. What a terrible way to die, what a terrible way to die. Annoooooouuuuuuncements.” Then they would tell you who won the archery or ping pong tournament that day and give prizes.

To this day, when someone makes an announcement that song pops in my head. So as we hit the peak of summer and when announcing the much anticipated release of the Trend Micro Advanced Threat Protection family of products, I can’t think of a better way to bring the news to you than giving you the image of a 14 year old camp counselor with more energy than pride breaking into song to tell you all about this outstanding new family of products.

I am excited to announce that the TippingPoint Advanced Threat Protection family is officially available.  With targeted attacks, ransomware and advanced threats taking aim on companies and organizations of all sizes at an alarming rate, Advanced Threat Protection couldn’t have come at a better time. The family is made up of 3 unique products:

  1. Advanced Threat Protection for Networks is a virtual or hardware appliance which enables 360 degree detection of network based targeted attacks and advanced threats. By using specialized detection engines and custom sandbox analysis Advanced Threat Protection identifies advanced and unknown malware, ransomware, zero day exploits, command-and-control communications, lateral movement and evasive attacker activities that are invisible to standard security defenses
  2. Advanced Threat Protection for Email is a hardware appliance that uses advanced detection techniques to identify and block spear-phishing emails that are often part of the initial phase of a targeted attack. Working seamlessly and in tandem with your existing email gateway or server security products, Email Inspector can operate in MTA (blocking), BCC mode (monitor only), or SPAN/TAP mode
  3. Advanced Threat Protection Analyzer provides advanced sandboxing analysis to extend the value of deployed security such as endpoint protection, web & email gateways, firewalls, and other Advanced Threat Protection products. Suspicious objects can be sent to the Analyzer sandbox for advanced analysis using multiple detection methods. If a threat is discovered, security solutions can be updated automatically.

Integrated Prevention

When TippingPoint Advanced Threat Protection detects a threat, it will alert the TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) and Threat Protection System (TPS). Once alerted to an attempted breach, the IPS or TPS can block both inbound and outbound communication to the command and control servers.  Advanced Threat Protection also monitors lateral traffic moving across the network, it can tell the IPS or TPS to block malicious east-west bound traffic to thwart attacks that may already be in the network.

Now that Advanced Threat Protection is available you can let it worry about finding threats in your network and you can head to summer camp to float on the river and hear less interesting announcements.
